Error updating customer

When trying to update a customer immediately following a get, I receive the following error:

{"ErrorMessage":"Data was already modified by another user.","ErrorCode":"ERROR_CODE_6","TimeStamp":"2022-06-18T18:12:18.8813529Z"}

What is the cause of this error and how can I fix it?
